My old man, was a 22 year Air Force, NCO. He was a mere 21, the day I was born. 1955, The year Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were born. I was informed of this fact, reading Malcom Dowell’s book, ‘Outlier’. The birth of the PC, started in 1955, another opportunity missed. If I had only learned to type.
Father’s day was just another day on the flight line. By the time, I could sort of pay attention, Dad’s B52 maintenance crew were 8 to 10 years older than I was. I got invaluable ways to piss off Dad, by his own crew, of young men. Dad was given the job, to teach boys how to be men. He had no training. It just came natural to him. Back then, there were expectations of men. These men seemed to cherish, the challenge.
Then it was my turn.
I have 3 daughters, by 2 Mothers. Their Mothers were beautiful smart women,
it was a tough 30 years. I immediately declared Father’s day was not a proper holiday. I just get to play golf or watch it, and they leave me alone. It was strange, they were all fine with that. Just like the day I said, they will never owe me money. They haven’t forgot.
Every day is Father’s Day. I’ve been fortunate, my girls are smart, they like life, the older they get, the better they are.
'“Sorry I didn’t have a boy Dad, but your grand daughter’s have great taste in husbands and boyfriends.” Much easier for me.
Happy Fathers day to all you Dad’s, It is my greatest gift, being a Dad.
